IRAs have been around since 1974, but barely 40 percent of American households have them. Those who have owned IRAs for more than 10 years have an average asset balance of $116,000. Last year, the median financial assets, not counting a primary residence, of households owning IRAs were six times greater than non-IRA households.

In 2006, 7,918 Americans will reach age 60 every day. That’s 330 of us every hour. In 1946, the average weekly wage was $46.69. About half of adults aged 25-29 had graduated high school, and less than 6 percent had gratuated college. In May, 1946, the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average reached their calendar year peaks of 20 and 212.30, respectively.
