"Every thing must sell. Everything from your storefront, to your logo, to your opening line, to the clothes that you wear, must sell. Why? Because it does anyway. If you look sloppy, that sells a point of view. If your delivery of service is impeccable, that sells who you are. A simple e-mail or communication going out to your
customers sells. … every symbol, word, appearance, and action sells something consciously or unconsciously. It sells an attitude, a point of view, a window into the soul of you or the business." Blair Singer, SalesDogs
Starting my new sales job, my boss told me my shoes were not acceptable, that people would judge me by that, and wearing old shoes was a poor reason to lose a $2,400 sale. Two years (and a couple pairs of new shoes) later, following my best sales month ever, he pulled me aside again. I expected some great and profound words of wisdom. “John, it’s time you started having your shirts dry cleaned and pressed,” was all he said. What he meant was that the rest of my skills were improving, but I could get in more places and pick up the tough sales with that professional laundry edge, because that sells something about me.
