Learning: With All Thy Getting Get Understanding
No matter how old we become, we can acquire knowledge and use it. We can gather wisdom and profit from it. We can grow and progress and improve—and, in the process, strengthen the lives of those within our circle of influence.
All of us can find a way to incorporate int
o our daily lives a regular pattern of study, a regular opportunity to grow and absorb and learn from the great writers of the world. We must not rest in our personal development.
If we keep our minds sharpened on good literature and uplifting entertainment, if we are constantly interested in learning new things and acquiring new skills, personal development is inevitable and the light of our personality and our character shines ever brighter.
If we starve them with the drivel of miserable shows and cheap and shoddy literature, they become poor indeed.
There is need for another education, without which the substance of our secular learning may lead only to our destruction. I refer to the education of the heart, of the conscience, of the character, of the spirit—those indefinable aspects of our personalities and characters that determine so certainly what we are and what we do in our relationships one with another.
It is incumbent on each of us to equip ourselves to do something worthwhile in society—to acquire more and more light, so that our personal light can help illuminate a darkened world.
