I worked for a guy who used to donate blood, and he was always hounding us to donate. This is the same boss who forgot to bail me out, so I guess not all my memories of him are bad. He got a pin for donating 10 gallons, which seemed like a lot of blood. Let’s see, eight pints to a gallon, donate every two months, it takes 80 pints and more than 13 years to do that. I was so impressed, I made my first donation. Earlier this month, I made my 106th donation.
That’s a lot of blood, but it’s done a lot of good.
I’m type O- along with six percent of the population. But for a long time, I was a baby quad, which meant that I either did or didn’t have something in my blood that was either good or not good for babies. I don’t remember the details, but I remember being told that every donation I made would save the lives of up to four babies. Having seven children, that meant something to me.
If you are not a blood donor, and you are able to donate, do it. As Art Williams says, “just do it.” It only takes about an hour, it only hurts for about a minute, but it makes you feel good for two months. And, it probably saves a life. Contact your local community blood center and donate. Tell me how it goes.
The title for this post comes from the song "Transfusion" by Nervous Norvus.
