“Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor liberty to purchase power.” Ben Franklin![]()
Ready to start an in-house demonstration, I asked if there were questions. “I don’t have a question,” said a reluctant husband. “All I ask is that you don’t lie to us.” My response (“I haven’t told a lie since 1987”) must have been good enough, because we proceeded with the show and had a good time, and they got some product.
But I’ve thought about that. What other careers are there where someone can just flat call you a liar and expect you not to be offended?
Unfortunately, the reputation for dishonesty is too often deserved. I’ve had people in my home lie to me, people on the phone lie to me, people behind counters lie to me. It is indefensible. How can that possibly be seen as good business? There should never be a question about your honesty.
