“The way to go from rags to riches is to start by getting a decent set of rags.” Leonard Spinrad
For a long time I resisted the idea that how
we dress makes a difference. Talent, skill, ability, intelligence, tenacity, those are the qualities that matter, those are the attributes that lead to success, not clothes.
But then I started hiring people. Phone interviews began the process, but that only got people through the front door, when they arrived for an in-depth interview. Without exception, no matter how well they had done on the phone, the impression that lasted was the one from their appearance. Also without exception, the ones who dressed appropriately, not too sharp, not too dull, were the ones who succeeded. We didn’t hire slobs. Once we sent a guy home to shave before we would talk to him. The prissies, the ones who were too flashy, too GQ, we sometimes hired but they never lasted. Their priorities were wrong. The ones who stayed, the ones who made money, the ones who made us money, were the ones who were neat, clean, pressed and comfortable with themselves.
