Conversation is our most significant form of communication, and some of us don’t realize we just aren’t good at it. Most of us talk too much. We are clever and knowledgeable and oh-so-fascinating with our dazzling repartee. But that’s not what good conversation is, according to Brian Tracy:
The art of good conversation centers very much
on your ability to ask questions and to listen attentively to the answers. You can lace the conversation with insights, ideas, and opinions, but you perfect the art and skill of conversation by perfecting the art and skill of asking good, well-worded questions that direct the conversation and give other people an opportunity to express themselves.
The first purpose of conversation is the enjoyment or pleasure of self-expression and interaction with other people.
The second purpose of conversation is to get to know another person better. This cannot be accomplished in a short meeting.
The third purpose of conversation is to build trust and credibility between people.
