Budgeting Time and Money
Successful people know themselves, not as they think they are, but as their habits have made them: the use of time and money are the most vital of these habits.
I got a call from John and Charlie,
my fifth-grade buddies, to come rake leaves for cash, $2 for a day of raking. The work didn’t appeal to me, but the prospect of $2 in cold, hard cash was too much to resist.
We raked steady all morning. Unknown to me, John and Charlie had arranged to be paid before lunch, so the homeowner gave us each $2 at noon. Eating hadn’t crossed my mind, so I was surprised to find the three of us walking downtown to the burger joint, where for a mere $1.85, I got a burger, a shake and fries. It was great.
About an hour later, as the food was wearing off, I realized what I had done, and worked the rest of the day to pay for a meal I’d already eaten. I couldn’t believe it. Raking all day for $2 was one thing. Working all afternoon for 15 cents was another deal altogether.
