I was listening to Never Wrestle With A Pig this morning in the car. I can’t quote Mark McCormick word-for-word, but the gist of it is that we all have a big but, as in “Kenny is excellent at blank, but….” or “Jennifer is the best at blank, but….”![]()
We should find the areas and tasks at which we excel, and focus on those, but we also need to work at improving skills and habits that are related to it. Say, for example, I am an excellent public speaker, but I take it for granted and procrastinate preparation until the night before my next speech. I can do that, and still give a good presentation, but not as good as I otherwise would have done.
McCormick says we can put up with these buts for a time, but we can’t let it go too long. Not his exact words, but again, the gist of it is that if we still have our big buts a year from now, shame on us.
