Is this your dream job?
It is, in many ways. I love both writing and drawing and I wouldn't be as happy to do just one or the other - I need both. I'd also like to own a pub and doodle at the bar, but maybe in my next life.
What have you done to deserve your dream job when so few others seem to?
What have I done? Been lucky. I think I must have done something very, very selfless in a past life to deserve this. But practically speaking, I also persevered and learned to take rejection and use it to motivate me.
You are not stranded on a one-palm-tree island, like characters in a recent cartoon, but “what would you say is the worst thing that ever happened to you?”
Oh, there have been some personal things, but professionally, nothing really stands out. Just the usual lumps you take on your way to a career. I was fired from the only professional job I ever had, but it led me to scramble on a freelance basis, which really worked out. It's all perspective, which you can only get from distance. I did forget my lines in a 7th-grade production of Grease. That sucked.
