What is your favorite cartoon or favorite cartoonist?
I can't say I've got one favorite--I've had
different favorites at different times of life.
Who was your first inspiration?
Growing up in the seventies, I spent a lot of time reading and copying Peanuts, like most kids. But I also really liked Crock and BC, and cheap little comic books like Sad Sack and Hot Stuff. I must have copied that Little Devil Hot Stuff a thousand times and never could get those damn ears right. After that, I became almost obsessed with Herman by Jim Unger, and then Mad Marginals by Sergio Aragones. I think that's where I picked up my love for the single panel cartoon--just the idea of one shot to tell it, and bang, it was over. I loved that.
As far as who I consider favorites now and overall, in addition to Aragones and Unger, I'd narrow it down (for purposes of the interview and attention span) to: Jim Borgman, Jerry Van Amerongen, Virgil Partch, Quino (brilliant Argentinean cartoonist), Patrick McDonnell, George Booth, Kliban, and Hilary Price.
