I wrote about a former boss, who noticed a mistake and sent an e-mail. I fixed the mistake and posted a message about it. A good friend, noticing the immediacy of the exchange, e-mailed me:
“How cool is it that you now have this really healthy way to vent and say what is on your mind at any given moment? Note to self: don’t tick off the blogger.”
She hardly lives in fear of ticking me off, but I
hadn’t really considered the autonomy we have in this humble role. That must be one reason blogging is so popular, you can say whatever you want about anything at any time. The guy who typeset my book had a poster with a quote from A. J. Liebling: “Freedom of the press belongs to those who own one.” My typesetter thought that applied to him and his Mac, but I never thought it would apply to me. Now it does.
A necessary companion to autonomy is restraint. With the responsibility of freedom must come self-control. Without restraint and without self-control, you have nothing but self-indulgence, and while self-indulgent blogs appear easy to write, nobody gives a flyin’ Zarquon.
