“The key to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but significance - and then even the small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning.” Oprah Winfrey
After agreeing to write my first book, I was overwhelmed with the enormity of the task: hundreds of hours of
interviews and research, organizing and transcribing notes, writing, rewriting, proofreading, typesetting, finding a printer. It was too much, too big, too hard. I talked to my boss about it, and she said simply to write little articles (that’s what I did for her) about the next thing, one story at a time, one word at a time. She was right. Six months, hundreds of little projects and 247 pages of pure literature later, the book was done.
That seems to be what we need in most situations. If the end game is worth the effort, figure out the small steps to get there, sort them out, and start with the next one. Do them one at a time. Just one at a time.
