You've been cartooning for a long time. When did you realize you wanted to make a living at it?
Hmm, good question. It's hard to be specific as to the epiphany, because part of me has always hoped to be a cartoonist, but you can't really go to the university and get a degree in it. I'd say I realized I was going to TRY to make a living at it when I was in graduate school at
At the time I was freelancing as the editorial cartoonist for the Bloomington Herald-Times, and my work was starting to get picked up by The NY Times, USA Today, Esquire, etc, and I gradually thought: "Hey, I'm having more success with this fun stuff I'm doing on the side than with my writing." It was clear to me that many of the other grad students were better, more serious writers than I was, too, which made my decision that much easier.
