More tornados and severe thunderstorms ripped through the weekend, leaving death and destruction in parts of several
states. There really isn’t much we can do if we are in the path of one of these storm, just a few basic things to try to protect our families.
Following the storm, however, comes a destructive force from which we can protect ourselves, what Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon calls “the storm chasers.” Storm chasers are con artists who offer bogus home repair. “Unfortunately, scam artists are almost always part of a storm’s aftermath,” says Nixon, who suggests these safeguards from these evil doers.
Be suspicious of workers who solicit door-to-door, drive unmarked vehicles, drive vehicles with out-of-state plates, ask for payment in advance, have a phone but not an address, do not carry identification.
Nixon recommends that you hire companies known by the Better Business Bureau. Ask to see a license before work begins. Make all agreements in writing. Pay only when the work is complete to your satisfaction.
