There’s No Right Way To Talk About Money, But Talk

I was talking to a friend about money and employment, and it touched in me an unexpected sore spot. Like many of us, money was a problem area in my marriage, and it is a problem now with my children, who tend to spend every dollar they get.Talk to kids about money, whatever their age, and explaine the Rule of 72 to them.

The state of Pennsylvania has “created a personal financial education web site” that covers “everything from banking, budgeting and investing, to buying a house to getting married.” Here is some good advice from the site:

Money is an emotional issue. In fact, conversations about money are almost never only about money. They're about self-worth and security and anxiety and independence and status and safety and priorities and so much more. For most of us, figuring out how to have open, candid conversations about money can be stressful.

But as we start planning and as we start saving, we also have to start talking with the people who matter most to us.

There's no right way to talk about money. Approaching your family might feel awkward at first, but it gets easier. Every family is different and it's ok to do it your own way.

So what I really want to know is how do you feel about people that dont use bank accounts. Do you feel this is odd or makes them untrustworthy in someway?
If someone were to keep money under their bed for example (instead of the local savings and loan), what type of box would you recommend.
Please advise.

People who don't use banks? Unusual, I suppose, but not uncommon, and not necessarily criminal or otherwise suspicious. It seems anyone who doesn’t use banks would have a logical reason, perhaps fear of unauthorized access from someone known or unknown, perhaps worry over creditors attempting to confiscate funds to pay for someone else’s debts. I see nothing nefarious in it. It may imply that the person is not trusting, but it doesn’t automatically make the person untrustworthy. I would be interested to know what experience in your past leads you to assume mischief.

I think the traditional modus operandi for those who hide money is burying coffee cans in the back yard. Any type of box under the bed would work, I guess, although a fire-proof lock box seems sensible. The interest isn’t good, but only a percentage or two below local banks.

My grandpa used to keep worms in coffee cans when he fished.
Dont you love the word "mischief"?
Its such a great word.
You are a question quencher John. An amazing curve ball hitter.

What does nafarious mean exactly?

Hmmm, since two Anonymous comments arrived one minute apart, I will assume both came from the same person. Nefarious simply means wicked or villainous. Mischief is an excellent word, but easier to use than nefarious or efficacious, two of my favorites. As for curve balls, I will quote one of my favorite childhood comic strips, BC: "you should catch me with a fungo." Thank you.
