I was surprised to see a friend’s photo in the paper today, in a letter to the editor. She was complaining – and rightly so – about how our school district handles the distribution of bad news, using small children as carrier pigeons, toting unsealed letters home to parents. She makes a valid point that since the schools teach these children how to read, it is a safe bet that they read and are confused by them.
The surprise at seeing her again in the paper comes from a very recent episode she endured as faculty advisor to a student newspaper, a powerless position that I’m sure doesn’t pay much if anything. Controversy arose over a free press issue, and she was sucked into the maelstrom despite being a mere observer. Her name appeared locally several times, and the story was picked up nationally.
Few people seek or enjoy such unwanted notoriety, and I know she did not. I admire her pluck and devotion as a parent to willingly submit to it all over again.
