An article in Money takes a look "behind the brand" to show that many high-priced name-brand items are made with the
same components as the discount versions. "Companies want you to believe there are clear differences between their product and the competition’s," says author Janet Paskin. "We’ll help you see through that claim."
The article compares big televisions, digital cameras, outerwear, cars and major appliances. Caveat emptor.
My mother used to work in a sewing factory. For a time, her job was to sew labels inside pants. She would get a stack of 300 identical pants, then sew in 40 labels for a designer brand, 40 more for another designer brand, 80 for a brand you could buy at large department store chains, and the rest for brands you could buy at the discount giant. Same pants, different labels. I always took her with me when I bought dress clothes.
