One of the two shopping malls in our town may be in trouble. According to the only retail tenant – that ought to be a big clue that there is trouble – the lack of foot traffic in the 275,000-square-foot shopping center doesn’t affect him because his comic book business "depends on repeat customers." But,
he says he anticipates that the building may be demolished. Surprise surprise.
I worked at that mall when my oldest child was born, early 1980s, and it was fairly busy then. Most of the retail space was in use, and there were plenty of people in the place, counting the old people walking for their health.
The site is owned by Wal-Mart, and there is already a regular Wal-Mart on the lot, not a Supercenter, so that is another pretty good clue about what will eventually happen. I mention it only because I admire the comic book guy, sitting there all alone, waiting it out, driving in to work every morning wondering if the wrecking ball will be swinging today.
