From Kiplinger’s Retirement Report, May 2006:
Notify Credit Bureaus
Report the death to all three credit-reporting agencies. Request that a deceased alert be placed on the report. "That means when a company wants to open credit in someone’s name and it sees the deceased alert, it will have the common sense to reject the application," says Jay Foley, executive director of Identity Theft Resource Center.
The credit agencies are Equifax (800-525-6285), Experian 888-397-3742, and TransUnion (800-680-7289).
Contact Other Entities
Notify the Social Security Administration immediately. Also alert the Department of Motor Vehicles, because a driver’s license is a key piece of identification that can be misused in the wrong hands.
