I would love to home school my children; they would not. But, I think home school is good.![]()
Henry Cate, III, sent an e-mail about how parents generally are better able to help students build sturdy character at home. He says public schools generally don’t teach a strong work ethic and are not effective at teaching discipline, and I agree.
There may be some value in protecting children from some of the crude and carnal elements of social life in public schools, but the big benefit that I see to home school is that the kids wouldn’t have so much dead time.
I’ve had children in public schools for more than 20 years, and have half of that still to go. The most discouraging thing is when they say all they did was watch videos (Toy Story seems to be a favorite time waster of local teachers) or word searches. I taught grades 6-12 for a year, and figure the average seven hours of school work could be done in less than 90 minutes. If you ran your business like most public schools, you would be broke.
