I Can’t Bring Myself To See The Da Vinci Code

I like movies, but not enough to pay movie theater prices. I’m content to wait a few months for the film to make it to our local dollar theater, a bargain at only $2.50. If I’m still interested in a film after that long, I sometimes go.dvc hanks.jpg

One exception was Jurassic Park. I was so engrossed in the book, I’d read it three times by the movie’s release, and had to see it. I was so excited walking into the theater, but 10 minutes later I knew it was a mistake. I don’t know whether Jurassic Park is a good movie – I can’t watch it – I just know that it is an awful representation of the book, a miserable experience.

So I expect the same thing with The Da Vinci Code. It was such a fun read, such a captivating story, I see no way the movie could do it justice, and feel certain I’ll be disappointed, even with Opie and Tom Hanks. How was it for you?

I haven't seen The Da Vinci Code either?

I have not read the book. Is it true that it's ficticious or is that the Right wings take, not to blaspheme Christianity?

Will you see it, or ever read the book? Of course, The Da Vinci Code is fiction. I didn't read anything in it that I took as blasphemous, although there certainly are some less than kind things said about certain historical organizations. The story is plausible, I think. My standard line is that Christ must have been married or he could not have known true suffering. Which doesn't always make me the most popular guy in the room. Personally, I don't understand all the fuss. It's just a book, a pretty good story, but still just a story. Popular fiction doesn't change how I worship, one way or another.

I received a thank you card today, unexpected, out of the blue, for doing a small, forgotten thing, nothing, really. It all started with The DaVinci Code. I was going to see it with a friend who canceled two hours... [Read More]

Tom Hanks is one of my all-time favourite actors but I have to say he just didn't seem comfortable in the role of Robert Langdon. He wasn't terrible but he just didn't come up to par with some of his previous roles which I felt was a shame. Audrey Tatou was very good in her role and I couldn't have imagined a better actress for the role. Overall I felt the film was great, even with Ron Howard's inevitable cheesy scene...'Godspeed' from Tom Hanks. After seeing the film I decided to read the book and I can see why some people prefer the book. However I think it is much harder for a film to grip then it is a book and so for that reason I gave The Da Vinci Code 9/10. I would say anyone should go and see it, just accept it as a film, not as an adaptation of a book.

I read a biography of Tom Hanks recently. His story is pretty interesting, with a lot of personal trama. Like you say, he's been a long-time favorite. I watched "DaVinci Code" on TV recently and the best word I could come up with was lackluster. None of the characters really grabbed me, and the onscreen telling of the story is too thin - as all movie adaptations are. I would read the Brown book again, but there are so many in line before I could get to it. Personally, DRF, I have a hard time separating books from their films. For that reason, I've never seen "Lonesome Dove," my favorite book.
