More than 96 percent of business owners
surveyed said they believed that having others view them as a person of integrity is very important, while only 37 percent of high school students surveyed shared that view.
When asked whether it was better to bend the rules and win or play by the rules and lose, 79.2 percent of business owners said the latter was better, compared with 41.7 percent of students.
Examples young people see of adults practicing unethical behavior has had a negative impact on students' views, contends local NAWBO President Kara Cenar.
"In light of Enron and the [George] Ryan trial, the thoughts and perceptions out there of our younger generation on what the leaders of today are like and how important integrity is are kind of distorted," she said. "It just enhances the need for us to reach back and get a hold of our younger generation quickly. The role models are what they see on TV, and there's been a lot of negative [news]."
