Leonardo Da Vinci On Keeping Our Work In Perspective

From the writings of Leonardo Da Vinci:

O thou that sleepest, what is sleep? Sleep is an image of Detail of study for 'Adoration Of The Magi'death. Oh why not let your work be such that after death you become an image of immortality?

We know well that errors are better recognized in the works of others than in our own; and often by reproving little faults in others, we may ignore great ones in ourselves.

Sitting too close at work may greatly deceive you.

It is well that you should often leave off work and take a little relaxation, because when you come back to it you are a better judge.

It is good to retire a distance because the work looks smaller and your eye takes in more of it at a glance and sees more easily the lack of harmony and proportion in the limbs and colours of the objects.

(What I mean to say is: "Hello, thanks for writing. I am sorry that I do not speak Spanish. I will try to get this translated and respond appropriately.")

John, you're better than you think! Saldes says (my translation):

"I find that it is great counsel which is given on this page, I suppose that the artist knows what he's talking about, I know that he knew what he was saying ... now Leonardo is so in vogue, that his work continues to atrophy, because those who see it don't look for more than adventures and they don't find beauty and harmony."

Easton - bless your little heart! Thanks so much for translating. My two years of junior high Spanish and Babel fish weren't getting the job done. I've enjoyed reading Da Vinci lately and have come to appreciate what he had to say as much as the other things he created.

The book I'm reading is Leonardo Da Vinci In His Own Words, available at bookstores and libraries near you. It is a treasure, a work of art in itself, and a bargain at less than $10.
