I love my desk. Laugh, but I’m not alone in this. Harry Nilsson, for one, loved his desk and wrote a song about it.![]()
My desk is wooden, real, and heavy. It is solid and stained like red maple syrup. The top is about the size of an arena football field, with room for work and papers and two lamps. On the left is one of those things (I ought to know what they are called), a second surface, slightly lower, slightly smaller, the perfect height and size for a computer, speakers, keyboard, a lamp, and 17 books.
The desk is worn in places and nicked. These are not my scars, but I take comfort in them. Some of the drawers are full, some are not, but they glide smoothly in and out.
I don’t own many things, and only two to which I am attached. One is my Lou Brock baseball bat, the other is my desk. I am prolific at this desk, perhaps just because I am so happy sitting here.
