I was laid off right before the birth of our first child, and after having my options explained by my HR supervisor, I was told I would not have to make additional payments, that the insurance was in place enough to cover the delivery. After the birth, the insurance company wouldn’t pay, and months of wrangling ensued.
Eventually I was in the office of our company president, who was a nice guy. "John," he finally said, "there’s nothing we can do. Why didn’t you buy the coverage?" I said, "because the HR supervisor said I wouldn’t need it." By the end of the week, the bill was paid. I don’t know whether the company paid it, or whether the company president paid it out of his own pocket, but it was paid. He hired me back soon after.
