Minding my own business the other day, I was startled to see that the son of one of my favorite baseball players, Bobby Bonds, was just one home run away from tying Babe Ruth for career dingers. ![]()
Admittedly, I don’t follow sports the way I once did, but still it seemed odd that I should not be aware of this particular milestone. Has it been in the news? Because I haven’t seen it.
The reason, according to Ken Rosenthal at Fox Sports, is indifference due to off-the-field events in professional baseball. "Fans, media and baseball people have grown understandably more skeptical after being exposed as naive, ignorant and just plain blind to the unseemly events of the past decade," said Rosenthal. "But the greater issue is trust. Investing emotionally in any future baseball accomplishment will require, at some level, a suspension of disbelief."
I’m not sure what that says about us as a society, that we can’t even trust men who play games of childhood, but it can’t be good.
