
I’m here with a computer, Internet, DVD player, cell phone, hot and cold running water and indoor plumbing. You gotta love technology. Here’s a look at a few of the steps it took to get us here. The original article is by Alex Hutchinson.
1955 – TV remote control. The first one was
"essentially a flashlight." The next iteration was an ultrasound model, which lasted until the mid-1980s when infrared came along.
1955 – Polio vaccine. Jonas Salk is the hero to 28,985 victims. By 2005, there are only 1,200 people with polio.
1957 – Three-point seatbelt. Nils Bohlin saves countless lives.
1958 – LASER beam.
1962 – Communications satellite. Telstar. JFK holds a press conference that is broadcast across the Atlantic.
1962 – LED. Nick Holonyak develops the light-emitting diode.
1964 – Music synthesizer. Robert Moog invents a synthesizer that uses a keyboard rather than punch cards.
1969 – Smoke detector. Randolph Smith and Kenneth House patent a battery-powered detector for home use.
1970 – Digital music. James Russell invents digital-to-optical recording and playback, but can’t convince the music industry to adopt it. Little did they know.
