I am eligible to donate blood today, my 106th pint, but I'm not going. I signed up for my blood center's Triple Crown Donation program, so I will give on a certain date later this month.![]()
My first donation, in 1976, came because my employer made me do it. He had just donated his 10th gallon, and he was keen that other people do it, too. I couldn't think of a reason not to donate, so I did. It is a fascinating process, but it is not pain free. They tape the tube to your wrist (if you don’t wear a watch) and it pulls out a hair or two when they remove it. Ouch!
Only about one in 20 Americans donate blood, and most of those donate only once or twice per year, so there is a constant need. If your health allows you to donate, I encourage you to do so. If you're not sure you are able to donate, go to your local blood center to find out. If you're afraid of needles, stop it.
Donating takes less than an hour, it could well save someone's life, and you get free cookies after.
