I was in a meeting, a low-level flunky trying to figure out why I was there. Out of nowhere, the boss asked for my recommendation to fill a vacancy. The choice was obvious to me – so I named
a talented and eager person who I guess had been overlooked. She was promoted and did an exceptional job for as long as she held the position.
She never knew I recommended her, and I don't imagine the boss remembered. It doesn't matter. What matters is that my boss recognized that I might have an opinion, and he let me speak. He seriously considered what I said, deemed it to be of value, and acted on it.
If you are the boss, find ways to encourage your employees to use their voices. Seek counsel of those who may have a fresh perspective. Make sure they know they are safe, and they will give you good information.
