A couple of local people face prison following charges of identity theft. Apparently the thieves copied credit card information from the purse of a friend who was spending the night at their house.
They used those numbers to access ATMs and play online poker. Perhaps their goal was to win enough to pay their friend back.
Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon remind us of the following guidelines:
Shred unwanted credit card offers and unneeded documents that contain personal information:
Never give out personal or financial information to anyone who contacts you – provide the data only if you have initiated contact;
Keep computers protected with a firewall, anti-spyware or anti-virus software;
Leave your Social Security number off of checks and your driver’s license.
