Take the No. 89 tennis player in the world and put him up against the
what, No. 259 player in the world, and no one cares, right? But apparently someone did care. Bets on the Wimbledon match between Arlos Berlocq and Richard Bloomfield "were about 30 times more than had been placed on similar British players and foreign opponents," more than half a million dollars.
Bloomfield won 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. "It may be nothing or it may be something," said Bill Babcock, Grand Slam administrator.
Maybe it was a hunch, just a coincidence. Bloomfield has never won an ATP tour match, and lost opening round matches at Wimbledon in 2003 and 2004. This was Berlocq's first Wimbledon.
