Another favorite hang out is Ha Ha Tonka State Park, over by Camdenton, Missouri. The park is, according to the Missouri State Parks web site, "a geological wonderland: sinkholes, caves, a huge natural bridge, soaring bluffs, and Missouri's twelfth largest spring. Fifteen miles of trail traverse the park, leading visitors to spectacular scenery, natural wonders and the famous castle ruins."![]()
The castle ruins are what remain of an attempt by Kansas City businessman Robert M. Snyder to build a European-style mansion on the property in 1905. Snyder died the next year and his sons continued the project. The building eventually became a popular hotel, but it burned in 1942. All that remains are parts of the outer wall.
Called Gunter Springs prior to 1895, Ha Ha Tonka was named after an Osage Indian phrase that means "laughing spirit," from the sound of the gushing spring.
The hiking trails are delightful, the spring is wonderful, and the natural bridge is just flat out cool. It’s a great day trip if you’re in the neighborhood, especially in autumn.
