It's always bad to get an envelope in the mail that has "THIS IS A BILL" printed on it in bold letters, all caps. I got one from the library, which I'm unhappy about because I'm one of their best customers,
I go there four or five times a week, and now I've gone and made them mad, and they're sending me a bill and I hope we can someday still be friends.
The bill was for a lost book, which, as far as I can tell, none of us read. We've looked all over for it, every place but one, I guess, but haven't found it. The amount of the fine doesn't bother me so much, the equivalent of a nice meal somewhere. What bothers me is that we lost a book. I can understand losing shoes, or losing car keys, or losing sunglasses. I cannot fathom losing a book. It just seems so unlikely, so disrespectful. I just can't believe I let this happen.
