"I swore never to read again after I gained no useful information about killing mockingbirds from To Kill A Mockingbird." Homer Simpson
I love the texture and intimacy of Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, or
Willa Cather's My Antonia, or Harriette Arnow's The Dollmaker. If Homer hasn't read anything since then, he's missing out. My second semester of college, the student paper had a list of 40 classics, and said that if you hadn't read at least half of them, you weren't ready for college. Despite being a long-time, avid reader, I had read only one of the books listed. So I set a goal to read them all, which I did over the next two years.
A good book, great literature, is worth 100 times its weight in gold. It entertains, it teaches, it humbles, it lifts, it transforms. I know Brian Tracy said that reading within your profession for 30 minutes a day would double your income. But take some time for other literature, too.
