We were out of business for the duration. In some countries, door-knocking missionaries just can't knock on doors during the World Cup. People in England certainly didn't want to be bothered – they were, in fact, pretty adamant. So we went to Plan B.![]()
Plan B was to get ourselves invited to watch the matches in people's homes. We asked a few people we knew if we could come over, but mostly we asked strangers. It was easy to start up a conversation: "No, we missed the match last night. No place to watch it." People got the hint, and word got around, and we ended up seeing most of the 1978 World Cup with strangers, and had some unlikely missionary moments we would otherwise not have had.
Whatever your plans, whatever your routines, whatever you're good at, you have to have something else ready when the inevitable unforeseen event occurs. If you're prepared, if you're willing to act, you may be surprised at how well Plan B turns out.

John - I shared this with my students today right after they requested periodic breaks in class so they could check World Cup scores. They give you a thumbs up!
