Traveling has been on my mind. Elvis has been on
my mind. So when my daughter made a peanut butter and banana sandwich yesterday, I offered to fry it up, like Elvis, but she looked at me like I was retarded, and not for the first time. I explained how Elvis liked his sandwiches over at Graceland, the King's home and safe haven for 20 years, a place where he could, according to Patricia Schultz in 1,000 Places To See Before You Die, "kick back in an atmosphere that to him said 'home' – crystal chandeliers, shag carpets, gilt mirrors, stained-glass windows, peacock-blue-and-gold curtains."
No pilgrimage to Memphis is complete without a spin by Sun Records, where Elvis and the likes of Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins made their first recordings. The building is surprisingly small, but some big sounds came from there.
Finish the night over on Beale Street. The bar-b-que is incredible, and the earthy music is compelling and everywhere. If Blind Mississippi is in town, go see him. You’ve been at your desk too long.
