Life's like that. You wake up, go to the kitchen to get a Saturday morning Moon Pie and realize there are eight in the box
instead four. Or you rent a movie you've never heard of and it turns out to be funny with a great soundtrack and you watch it again. Or you hear a nearly forgotten former favorite song on the radio. You get an e-mail from a new friend, or from an old one.
Some surprises are more significant. A gift without an occasion, or a weekend getaway on a whim. An unexpected career opportunity. A child who – reluctantly, despite odds against – not only gets in and performs but excels, and you're so proud you want to bust. A relative who isn't so mean anymore.
Paul McCartney described life on tour as "a very real grind with occasional spasms of unreality." So take more pleasure in the spasms, in the surprises. It's Saturday morning and there are seven Moon Pies left. Enjoy.
