A man in Detroit found $21,000 in savings bonds and returned them to the owner. The story is slightly more interesting because the man, Charles Moore, lives in a homeless shelter, and the bonds were found in a trash bin, but only slightly.
Certainly, Moore did the right thing, which always should be honored. He has apparently received more than $4,000 in cash and gifts, a job lead, and a chance at an apartment. Good for him, and I hope it makes a difference.
But I have to wonder why this story made the news. I understand that if "dog bites man" that's not news, and if "man bites dog" that is news. So did this story make the news because a man was honest, or because a homeless man was honest? And aren't both assumptions a sad reflection on us?
