One of O. Henry's most famous works is The Gift Of The Magi, in which a young couple supposedly in love botches their first Christmas together by selling off their most treasured possessions to buy something that matches the others most treasured possession. She sells her hair so she can buy a chain for his watch; he sells the watch to buy combs for her hair. And, of course, everyone assumes this is some sign of unselfish love and devotion.
Baloney.
What we've got here, to quote Cool Hand Luke, is a failure to communicate. And bask in the glow of their so-called love all you want, the couple is doomed to fail because they simply don't talk to each other. They hide their minds, their thoughts, their true treasure, from each other, and that always leads to emotional and physical distance, and no relationship can long endure that.

"The Gift of the Magi" is one of O. Henry's most famous stories. It is not an example of failure to communicate it is one of unselfish love and the power to sacrifice for your love. This love will last forever.
