The nicest minor league baseball stadium in the country is in my town, perfect for baseball, comfortable, intimate, close to the action. The team is good and fun to watch.
Hammons Field is named for John Q. Hammons, hotel mogul and philanthropist. I've photographed him for various projects, and he always treated me with courtesy and respect, not like a pest. Everything Mr. Hammons does, as near as I can tell, is done with integrity. He holds his name in high regard and everything he puts that name to is top quality, the best.
The stadium has a beautiful video screen in centerfield, great for watching replays, crowd activities, and, of course, for advertising. Last night, there was an impressive fireworks display to celebrate the conclusion of the team's second season. While this fabulous, colorful aerial ballet was flashing above our heads, the fireworks were also being shown on the big screen – and some people were watching the TV. Go figure.
Okay, if you must know, the reason I suddenly laughed for no apparent reason is that the sound system played Great Balls Of Fire during the fireworks, and I must have been the last person in the crowd to get it.
