Theft Of Personal Information From Department Of Veteran Affairs Exposes Millions Of People

Continued diligence is the best way to protect yourself from identity theft. This is from Kiplinger’s Retirement Report, July 2006:

Up to 26.5 million names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth were stolen in early May from the home of an employee of the Department of Veteran Affairs. In some cases, home addresses, disability ratings and spousal information were taken. For updates and for tips to protect yourself from identity theft, visit FirstGov.com or call 800-333-4636.

Check financial statements for suspicious activity and monitor your credit report. You can get one free credit report a year from each of the three major credit bureaus; visit https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp or call 877-322-8228 to receive yours.
