I'm watching high school fast-pitch softball, a game that is new to me. The pitching motion is, well, unique. I can think of nothing in sports to compare it to. The motion is a singular and isolated skill, fascinating, but with no relevant value away from the ball field.
Which is just like algebra. I have a brother who once claimed that he actually used algebra in some aluminum siding project, but I suspect he said that just to impress some girl.
There may be people who don't understand why a young woman would spend so many hours perfecting a skill that is otherwise useless, but I understand. It's the same reason why anyone would take a course in Russian socioeconomics – just for fun.
