I made a new friend this week, David, who is a big Bob Dylan fan. We spent an hour listening to Leadbelly the other day, and that was good. We compared notes on watching Dylan live and talked about some of his albums. You could talk all day and not get to all of his albums, and many of them are so radically different from the others. They are all interesting, but I recommend Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited.
The thing I like about Dylan is that he sings some pretty good short stories, and he delivers a lot of good lines. I like good sentences wherever they are. For example, "I've seen better times, but who has not." Or, my favorite, "I only have one clean shirt left and it smells of stale perfume," and, right next to it, "In fourteen months, I only smiled once and I didn't do it consciously."
Boy, do I know that feeling.
