If you can, if you are physically and medically able, giving blood is the right thing to do. Where I live, it takes 275 donations every day to meet the needs of local hospitals, and of course, the need is greater during holiday weekends, like this one.
The nurse who took my medical history today noticed that I'm a long-time donor. She was nearly brought to tears as she told me of how her father died of cancer, but she said that she was given an extra full year with her dad because he was able to get sufficient blood transfusions. I wonder what she thinks that extra time with her dad was worth. I wonder how much she appreciates people like you who take an hour every two months to save a few lives.
